The Route: Utah to Colorado

This route guide provides a general overview for commercial truck drivers traveling from Utah to Colorado. The most common and efficient route utilizes Interstate 70 (I-70) for the majority of the trip.

Starting Point: Eastern Utah (e.g., Green River)

  1. Begin on I-70 Eastbound.
  2. Continue on I-70 East, passing through scenic canyonlands and high desert terrain.

Colorado Entry & Major Cities:

  1. Cross the Utah-Colorado border east of Cisco, Utah.
  2. I-70 will take you directly through the heart of the Colorado Rockies. Be prepared for steep grades and potentially heavy traffic, especially around Vail Pass.
  3. Continue East on I-70 towards Denver.
  4. I-70 provides access to major cities like Grand Junction (via Exit 26 off I-70), Glenwood Springs, Vail, and Denver. Your final destination within Colorado will determine your ultimate exit from I-70.

Compliance & Permits

Trucking regulations are subject to change, so drivers must verify the latest requirements before each trip.

Weigh Stations & Ports of Entry:

  • Utah: Look for weigh stations along I-70 in eastern Utah. These are usually well-marked with signage. The most common locations include Salina (mile marker 152) and Crescent Junction (mile marker 186). Always check for open/closed status.
  • Colorado: The primary port of entry / weigh station is located just after the Utah/Colorado border near Fruita (near mile marker 15). Other weigh stations can be found along I-70 throughout Colorado. Always be aware of the current status of these stations using apps or DOT websites.

Permits:

  • While a specific state permit may not always be needed just for traversing the state on I-70, if your load exceeds standard size and weight limits, you will require an Oversize/Overweight permit from both Utah and Colorado. Check dimension and weight restrictions with each state's DOT.
  • The KYU number is NOT required for this route. The NM WDT permit is not required for this route.

Risks & Hazards

The Utah-Colorado corridor presents several potential risks that drivers should be prepared for.

Seasonal Weather:

  • Winter (October - April): Heavy snowfall and icy conditions are common in the Colorado Rockies and even in parts of eastern Utah along I-70. Chain laws are frequently enforced during winter storms, requiring drivers to install tire chains on their vehicles. Always check weather forecasts and road conditions before and during your trip. Ensure your truck is properly winterized.
  • Summer (June - August): Intense heat can be a factor, especially in the lower elevations of eastern Utah and western Colorado. Overheating is a concern, and drivers should regularly check their vehicle's coolant levels and avoid prolonged idling. Also be alert for sudden summer thunderstorms, which can bring flash flooding and reduced visibility.
  • Year-Round: Strong winds are common in this region, especially in open areas. Be prepared for gusts that can affect vehicle handling. Mountain driving also requires extra caution due to steep grades, sharp curves, and limited visibility. Always use appropriate gearing and maintain safe speeds. Watch out for wildlife crossing the highways, especially at dawn and dusk.

Remember to stay informed about current road conditions and weather forecasts by using resources like the DOT websites for Utah and Colorado, as well as weather apps and radio broadcasts.
