The Route: Mississippi to New York
This guide provides a recommended route for commercial truck drivers traveling from Mississippi to New York. While variations exist, this route prioritizes major interstates for efficiency and accessibility.
We will primarily use I-20 East, transitioning to I-85 North, then I-95 North.
Leg 1: Mississippi to Georgia: Begin your journey on I-20 East from your origin point in Mississippi. Follow I-20 East through Mississippi and into Alabama. Continue east until reaching Atlanta, Georgia.
Leg 2: Georgia to Virginia: In Atlanta, merge onto I-85 North. This will take you through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and into Virginia. I-85 can experience significant traffic congestion around major metropolitan areas like Atlanta, Charlotte, and Greensboro. Plan accordingly.
Leg 3: Virginia to New York: Continue on I-85 North until it merges with I-95 North in Virginia. Proceed north on I-95. This will take you through Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and finally into New York. Expect heavy traffic congestion throughout this section, especially in the Northeast corridor (Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City). Familiarize yourself with potential alternate routes (e.g., I-81 as a bypass) if significant delays are anticipated.
Compliance & Permits
Throughout this route, you will encounter weigh stations and potentially ports of entry. Be prepared to stop and comply with all regulations. Expect weigh stations in all states crossed. Specific locations to be aware of, though their operational status may vary:
- Georgia: Various weigh stations along I-85 North.
- Virginia: Multiple weigh stations on I-85 and I-95 North.
- Maryland: I-95 North weigh stations.
- New Jersey: I-95 North weigh stations.
Remember to consult with your company’s compliance department and use a truck-specific GPS or routing software to identify active weigh station locations and hours of operation.
Permit Requirements: If your vehicle exceeds standard weight or dimension limits, obtain all necessary over-dimensional/overweight permits from each state before beginning your trip. States such as New York require the New York Highway Use Tax (NY HUT) permit for vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 18,000 pounds. Make sure you are compliant with NY HUT requirements. Additionally, if travelling through Kentucky, the KYU is required. Consult your company's compliance department or research state-specific requirements.
Risks & Hazards
This route presents several potential hazards dependent on the time of year.
Summer: High temperatures in the Southeast can lead to tire blowouts and potential engine overheating. Regularly check tire pressure and engine coolant levels. Thunderstorms are common in the Southeast during summer months, potentially causing flash flooding and reduced visibility.
Winter: While snow and ice are less frequent in the early parts of the route, the Northeast corridor (especially Pennsylvania and New York) can experience significant snowfall and icy conditions. Be prepared for winter driving conditions, including chain requirements in certain areas.
Year-Round: Heavy traffic congestion along I-95, particularly in the Northeast, is a consistent hazard. Practice defensive driving techniques and maintain a safe following distance. Construction zones are common along the entire route; pay close attention to posted speed limits and lane closures. Regularly monitor weather forecasts for severe weather alerts and adjust your travel plans accordingly. Ensure all cargo is properly secured to prevent shifting during transit.
